Change in North Carolina General Contractor License Law

North Carolina General Contractors are now required to include their license number on all contracts, websites, and advertisements according to a new regulation, 21 NCAC 12.0501, passed by the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors.

Most General Contractors already include their license numbers on contracts and websites, however, what qualifies as an advertisement is not as clear. General Contractors should err on the safe side and include their license numbers on business cards, project signs, vehicles, letterhead, stationery, and e-mail signatures to avoid issues with the new regulation.

The Board will likely be taking a lenient approach to stationery and business cards to allow contractors to transition into compliance. However, contractors can still work towards compliance before acquiring new advertising materials by hand writing their license numbers on business cards or adding a sticker with license numbers to vehicle signs and project signs.

The Board stated it will provide clarification on the specifics such as what is precisely meant by “advertisements” in future amendments.
