What to Know About “The Ravine” in Downtown Memphis
An undefined corridor between Union and Madison Avenues in the Edge District of Downtown Memphis will soon be developed into a public greenspace called “The Ravine” after being greenlit by community leaders who hope to utilize the space to bring the community together for live music, recreational activities, and more.
This bodes well for local contractors hoping to lend a hand to this exciting project, which promises to bring more people from local suburbs to the burgeoning area. Designed for Community
According to Ethan Knight, VP of Development for Development Services Group (DSG), The Ravine is “designed for community, recreation, and artistry.” He notes that the “intentionally flexible destination seeks to engage every type of Memphian and visitor to our growing and vibrant downtown.
The Ravine is planned to feature recreational areas stretching from one end to the other to benefit guests of all ages including:
- Retail plaza
- Kid-friendly playgrounds with water features
- Flexible seating
- Amphitheater performance venue
- Festival and event spaces
- Food and beverage components
Knight believes that the Edge District is lacking a “true public gathering point,” and hopes to join other nationally recognized greenspaces by turning this forgotten area into a substantial asset for public and private entities.
A “$5 Million Vision”
The Ravine will be developed in multiple phases to build out the essential elements first while giving potential stakeholders more opportunities to invest throughout the project’s timeline. Downtown Memphis, which has already invested heavily in new housing, is in need of community spaces for residents to enjoy.
In an article for Local Memphis, Dean Thomas, principal of Dalhof Thomas Design Studio in Memphis noted, “In any urban development, it’s crucial to give residents, employees, and visitors alike civic space to gather and interact throughout the day. The design for The Ravine provides this for users of all backgrounds and abilities through a diversity of experiences woven within.”
Memphis Continues to Grow
Revitalization of the Edge District has been spurred by a $73 million mixed-use redevelopment project courtesy of DSG. The real estate developer is transforming a 10-acre plot of historic properties and parcels into commercial multifamily developments and new headquarters for companies like Orion Federal Credit Union and LEO Events. Once the Edge District has reached its potential, developers believe it will help increase property value and boost the local economy.
